Carr Moss Kennels & Cattery

Questions & Answers

Why should we choose kennels/cattery for our pets?

Whether you use kennels, home boarder or house sitter is your choice and you need to be comfortable leaving your beloved pet(s) in someone else’s care when you are unable to. There is a place for each one and not all dogs/cats will adapt to kennels (same applies to the others as well).
Kennels are stimulating environments with lots of different sounds and smells which most dogs are happy with but for one or two can be overwhelming (we have only had one dog where we recommended that kennels were not for them, all others adapted during the stay).
We can offer security and someone is on the premises at all times so will hear & react to any issues in a timely manner. Most of our customers are more than happy with the service we provide, if you aren’t sure then call us and we can talk through our routine or discuss your concerns. We aren’t going to say we are the best or only option; we will just outline what we do which seems to work.

Do you walk the dogs and how often?

No. We don’t know how the dog will react on a lead with a stranger and we would be spending most of our time walking sedately around the local fields. We currently have two exercise yards which the dogs will have access to several times a day for free running/strolling and that along with exchanging greetings with the other boarders provides sufficient exercise for most dogs.

Does my dog and/or cat have to be vaccinated prior to boarding?

Yes, dogs should be up to date with their annual boosters. If you are unsure whether your dog is covered, please contact your vet who will be able to advise you. Cats should be vaccinated against influenza and feline enteritis prior to boarding and must be up to date with their annual booster.
Please ensure you bring along your pet's vaccination record as we do need to see it.
If you have lost your vaccination certificate and are unable to get a copy in time don’t panic. All we ask is that you contact the vet who administered the last vaccine and give authority for us to speak to them regarding your pet’s vaccinations

Kennel cough vaccine - should I protect my dog against kennel cough?

Yes, this vaccination is now compulsory, your dog must be vaccinated at least two weeks prior to boarding as in that period they will be shedding a live virus.
Dogs are at risk wherever there are a large number in the same environment, for example, boarding kennels, shows, in the park, on the beach and training classes. For further information on kennel cough please speak to your veterinary surgeon.
If the vaccine was administered within two weeks of the dog arriving, we reserve the right to refuse admittance as it puts the other boarders at risk.

How much notice do you need for me to board my pet?

Book as soon as you know the dates you are planning to go away. We are limited to 20 dogs and 10 cats so can fill up very quickly in peak times.
Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Do you require a deposit?

No, we do not ask for a deposit. Boarding fees are payable on collection (or drop off if someone else is collecting the pet for you). Should you no longer require your booking, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can release the pen to other customers who are waiting. We do not charge any cancellation fees.

What information do you need?

As much as possible!
To book we just need your name, the pets name, a contact number (in case we need to talk to you prior to the stay), pets breed and age.
For the stay then the more information about your pet the better to help them settle so any special requirements, eating habits, sleeping arrangements (Basket, pad or crate), do they destroy
toys/bedding, are they anxious near other animals etc.

Will my dog mix with other dogs?

No. only dogs from the same household will be out in the exercise yard together. They can see other dogs through the mesh and get nose to nose but they cannot interact with any other dog.

Do I need to bring anything along for my pet whilst they are staying with you?

You can bring along anything you feel will make your pet’s stay more enjoyable. For example, bedding and toys. However, we do provide everything and animals can become destructive so anything brought is at your own risk.

What about food?

We stock a mix of dry and tinned/pouch foods. You are welcome to bring your own food especially if they are on raw or a specialist diet or you just want to keep some consistency. A lot of pets won’t eat for the first day or so whilst they settle in so we will monitor and mix things up if needed to get their appetites going.
We will spoil them with treats unless requested not to.

My dog and/or cat receive regular medication, would you be able to administer this whilst boarding?

Yes, we are able to care for most pets with a medical requirement within reason at no extra cost. However, please contact us prior to boarding to make us aware of the condition and what treatment is being administered. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure correct instructions and the correct quantity of medication is passed to us on arrival.

What happens should my pet is taken ill during its stay with you?

We always request that you leave us a contact number in the event of any emergency involving your pet’s welfare. If you are going abroad we also ask for an emergency contact in this country who can make decisions for you and that you inform them that they are a contact. We will always try and contact yourselves (or your nominated contact) before taking any action. If action is required, we will try to take the pet to your usual vet if they are local or else to our 24 hour emergency vet.

My pet has never been in kennels/cattery before will he be ok?

Dogs are very adaptable, but it can take 1-2 days for them to become familiar with the new surroundings and routines. Cats can be more obtuse so we will always keep an extra close watch on new boarders to ensure that they are as settled as possible.
We welcome visits prior to boarding by appointment so that you can be satisfied with how they will be looked after to enable you to relax knowing they are being looked after.

Should I flea & worm treat my pet before arrival?

Yes we always advise that you flea and worm treat your pet with treatment from your vet the week before they stay with us. Whilst this is not compulsory it is strongly advised for both the protection of your pet and other guests that are staying with us.

Do you take all dogs

Due to the change in regulations, we are currently unable to take XL Bullies or other deemed dangerous dogs.

We also have the right to refuse to board any dog which we feel is not suitable for boarding or shows aggression problems. We have the right to ask the owner or the emergency contact to remove a dog from the property if we feel the dog poses a risk to itself or others.
